MONASTERY LADY OF THE ANGELS
(visit Anastasia Barefoot)
In the south of Corfu Island in the village of Lefkimmi, which is 40 km. from the capital of the island, there is the monastery of the Lady of the Angels.
This area is called the Greek Venice, because there is a river flowing here.
The old woman Anastasia Barefoot lived here in the ancient monastery. Why was she called so?
The Theotokos appeared to her in a dream barefoot, after which the nun didn’t wear shoes for the rest of her life.
The monastery was created in 1647.
Mother Anastasia has lived here since 1933. She didn’t go to the doctors, the only medicine that she took was the oil from the lamp from the icon of the Theotokos. The ancient olive tree is also very famous – the nun lived inside of it for three years. It turned into a small church over the time.
Anastasia Sandals had the gift of serendipity and miracles occurred while she was praying. The nun died in 1979. Her relics were found and put in the monastery. They are fragrant.
Pilgrims take pebbles from the grave of the old woman Anastasia, making a wish. When these wishes come true, according to legend, the pebbles need to be brought back.
The monk Iakov currently serves here. Previously he lived on mount Athos for 14 years in the monastery of Dohiar. He was the spiritual child of the famous Gregory’s father. He tells about the life and spiritual exploits of the nun to all pilgrims who come to the monastery.
